Five Questions With Chad Wolf of Carolina Liar

October 9, 2008 at 12:00PM by Katie Amey |

The lead singer of this soulful band discusses their cultural mix, the MTV show — The Hills — that gave them their big break, and how he gained the nickname of Carolina's liar.

SO, YOU'RE THE ONLY AMERICAN GUY IN A BAND OF ALL SWEDES. WHAT'S THAT LIKE?
I'd been to Sweden a couple of times by the time we got together. And in L.A., everyone that I lived in a house with was from Sweden. It's actually been quite fun. Candy from other countries is such a fun thing because you get all of these neat flavors that just don't exist here. I would bring Turkish pepper into the rehearsal room. It's kind of like pepper licorice — black licorice with pepper and salt. It's a great candy! Anyway, I would always get bags of that every morning on my way to practice. I was on a strict diet at the time, so I couldn't eat candy — but I could buy it for everybody else!

HOW DID THIS HILLS COLLABORATION COME ABOUT?
I got a call from my label to go to a meeting at MTV and to bring my guitar. I said yes — really, I just wanted to see what was going on inside MTV! So, I went into this conference room and played three songs. They were talking about The Hills — I actually had never seen any of the episodes, but I had heard about it. We came up with the idea to use the CD on The Hills, but it seemed so casual that it didn't seem serious. And then we were in Seattle and we got the first clips — we thought it was crazy! The song had turned into this extremely romantic moment in this girl's life.

SO, ARE YOU TEAM HEIDI OR TEAM LAUREN?
I would say more Lauren. When we went to the Hills party, those girls were fighting pretty good by the time we got there. We didn't meet her, though — but we met Whitney. She was right behind us when we walked in, so we talked with her for a couple of minutes. For most of the party, we were just running around this insane mansion. We met the owner of the house, but he was kind of mysterious because he wouldn't introduce himself to anybody. Everybody would shake his hand and they would say their name and he would never give his name.

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WERE AN EXTRA IN A CELINE DION VIDEO?
I sure was. A friend of mine was working for a casting company and they knew how hard up I was for cash at the time. I guess the guy that was supposed to be there didn't show up. They were like, "We need you to come in and dance and maybe make out with a girl." And I thought, "Not bad work." But I'm not a dancer — I'm the stiffest white guy you will ever meet. I don't even remember the name of the song that it was for. I've never seen the video — I don't think it was released in this country. I heard the song once in a JCPenney on the East Coast. I was like, "I know this song!"

SO, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME "CAROLINA LIAR"?
A producer I was working with said I was the biggest liar that he'd ever met. It's really not true — it's just where I grew up. I was always telling stories about how my grandfather got run over by a big tractor in front of me. And those things don't sound true at all — but they were. My grandfather was kind of crazy and got this idea that it was a hassle to sit in the tractor and put it in gear to start it. So, he dismantled the whole safety mechanism and cranked the tractor on and it ran him over right in front of me. It crushed the whole side of his body. We pulled him up from underneath the tractor and he's like, "Just put me in my house, I'll sleep this off!" We were like, "Dude, your whole body is broken, you're not sleeping that off!" I'm from Carolina, that's the story.
