Corbin Bleu of High School Musical 3

Starring in High School Musical 3: Senior Year as Zac’s trusty sidekick, Corbin Bleu dishes about what surprised him in this final script, his transition from actor to producer and back, and why all he needs is a chai soy latte to make him feel at home!

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING BACK HERE FOR THE LAST HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL?

The fact that the movie is senior year and we’re leaving the friends that we’ve made here on set, it mimics what’s going on here. We are really just trying to enjoy our last moments. I even chose to stay in the same hotel I stayed in the first time because there are so many memories here. The guy who works at the coffee shop is the same guy who was here at the first movie. When I would come down here every morning, I would order a chai soy latte. And when I came down here this year, and he was like, “Hey, man, still want your chai soy latte?” I was like, “Oh, my God! You remember!” So many connections have been made here, and so many memories.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN THIS MOVIE?

The major surprise for me was that I was going to be doing a number with Zac. Last year I got a chance to do the duet with Lucas, and it’s just going to be cool to do another. We’ve never had that combo before. Being best friends, we’re in scenes together and we have all this interaction with each other, but it’s mainly on the basketball court. This time, it’s going to be on the dance floor.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HSM PHENOMENON?

The one thing that always sticks out for me is the South America trip. We performed in São Paulo, Brazil, in front of 70,000 people and had an army escort us out of the stadium because there were so many people. We blocked traffic, and the screams and roar of the soccer stadium went for miles. Then there are the low-key moments when you really get to learn about each other. We’ve been through a lot together, and we’ve had good times and bad times. We’re a family now. The other day [director] Kenny Ortega read us a letter from this little girl in Africa — and it was one of the most inspiring, beautiful things. She told us to just keep doing what we were doing, and about how many people we were touching and how we touched her life. That’s what High School Musical is all about.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU HAD DONE IN YOUR OWN HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE THAT YOU DIDN’T GET TO DO?

I try not to regret much. I think everything happens for a reason. But I’ve always wanted to take a speech and debate class. I think that if there were any class that should be mandatory in schools, that should be it.

SO, WHAT ARE SOME OTHER PROJECTS YOU’VE BEEN WORKING ON?

I’ve been working on my new album. This time around, I’m writing. I’m on all of it. I wanted to musically incorporate as many [different types of music] as I could into it. It’s definitely stuff you can still dance to, but it’s more personal. Also, I just finished a new film that I produced with my father, Free Style. [When producing], you get a sense of what you need to see for a movie. I think we did a great job with what we wanted to do. The backdrop is motocross, and I think we captured the rawness of the sport. And it’s also a great love story.
