Five Questions with Ashlyne Huff

January 25, 2010 at 3:00PM by Gennifer Delman |

Ashlyne Huff

Singer, songwriter, dancer… is there anything Ashlyne Huff can't do? We recently caught up with the Nashville pop artist and talked about her single "Heart of Gold," an upcoming tour, who is on her iPod, and more! Read on to see what she had to say.

CosmoGirl: We love your song "Heart of Gold!" What's the story behind it?

Ashlyne Huff: In essence, it's calling out a relationship-phobic guy that can't commit to anything. My best friend was dealing with this guy who was friends with her one minute, asking for more the next, and then acting like she didn't exist. She wised up, but he didn't because he's still calling her. He called her a couple weeks ago and I wrote this song two years ago! He doesn't even know the song was written about him, we'll tell him eventually.

CG: What was it like growing up with such a musical father?

AH: My father is the best human being I've ever met — he's my best friend, he's my hero, my everything. It's been such an honor to watch my Dad work. His work ethic and passion for every note on any album he plays is ridiculous. He constantly reminds me that I will always be a work-in-progress as a human and as an artist-to know that I've never fully arrived. To know that makes me work harder every day.

CG: You're going on tour soon! How excited are you, and what can audience members expect from your performance?

AH: So excited! We've got three players: a guitar, bass, and drum player. I will also have a dancer who will sing backup with me. There will be some dancing here and there, and obviously some singing. I will be singing the whole time, for real! Also just a lot of energy; we're going to play everything that's on the record. I intend on getting to know everyone after the show, singing everything, and just putting on a 40-minute piece that they'll want to see again.

CG: How would you describe your style? Has it changed since you moved from Nashville to L.A.?

AH: My style in general is whatever fits! My favorite thing to wear is sweatpants, but of course you can't do that all the time! My style is tomboy with a little feminine quality to it. So I might wear a striped shirt with a schoolboy jacket, but then I'll wear heels with it. You know, jeans with a cute top but with motorcycle boots. It's basically for comfort!

CG: Who are you listening to on your iPod besides your favorite country stars?

AH: Two of my favorite bands actually come from Nashville: Kings of Leon and Paramore. I love them! I am so jealous of Hayley's voice. And Kings of Leon are timeless and they don't even know it, which is crazy! They're all so talented. I also really like Justin Nozuka; his whole album is just wonderful. His attention to detail and the way he sings is astounding.
