Beware of the BFF Swap!

June 16, 2010 at 10:00AM by Gennifer Delman |

Friends

You've seen her in the hallways, in AP history, and at student council meetings. She's your grade's social butterfly and she's constantly linked to a new BFF. What's her deal? Girls like her aren't just at school but in Hollywood, too. Whether it's Demi and Miley or Demi and Selena, there is a name for this behavior and it's called the BFF swap. These girls do it for different reasons, and it's important that you keep an eye out for the signs so you don't fall victim. Read on:

Revenge and Jealousy

These acts are so intertwined. Remember when Demi recently snapped back to a reporter who asked how Selena was? "Ask Taylor!" she said. Some young ladies need to act out in order to make others jealous, so beware. If a new girl is latching on to you, be cautious. Though she may be sincere, observe her behavior and make a wise judgment.

Attention

In high school, I can recall one girl who edited her MySpace "Top 8" so much that I couldn't keep track. Though it's cool to dabble in different circles, a best friend ought to be a constant in your life. Some thrive off of being the center of attention, and this could mean alternating their social circles to make sure the spotlight is never away from them.

Some Words of Advice

It's essential that you don't confuse the BFF swap with making new friends. If your mate has been hanging around with a new coworker at a job that doesn't mean that they're abandoning you! So if you ever feel left out, speak up. Speak at a normal volume and express that your friend's actions are hurting you. This will be better than avoiding the situation; your feelings will only grow more intense and complicate things.

Do you know someone constantly changing their BFF? Do YOU do it? Start the conversation in the comments section!

xoxo,

Gennifer

Take Part in World Blood Donor Day

June 9, 2010 at 2:00PM by Tyler Rowell |

World Blood Donor Day

Did you know that every two seconds, someone needs blood? Sadly, less than 10 percent of Americans currently give blood. But, if just 1 percent more donated, the nation's blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future. So, we encourage you to take part in World Blood Donor Day on June 14th and extending through Sunday, June 20th.

Not only can you take part in a great cause, but you can look amazing while doing it too. Nexcare Brand bandages and America's Blood Centers are thanking donors with limited edition Nexcare Brand bandages. The collection of three Nexcare bandages are designed to signify the patriotic act and hero in every American who commits to saving lives by donating blood. And, of course the stylish band-aids create awareness for others to do the same! Perfect timing too since World Blood Donor Day actually begins on Flag Day.

Will you be donating blood for this great cause? Check out Nexcaregive.com to find a local blood center, share your story, and register to receive coupons and a free sampling of bandages.

Charity We Love: NoWorriesNow.Org

June 3, 2010 at 11:45AM by Lauren Brown |

Kimmy's World

With prom season in full swing, we just had to give props to an amazing nonprofit organization called No Worries Now. They give teens diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses the chance to forget their struggles for just one night and have their own, amazing prom. No Worries Now was founded by Southern California high school student Fred Scarf whose best friend passed away from a rare form of bone cancer before they were able to attend prom together. Shortly after, Fred founded the organization to ensure that all teens living with life-threatening illnesses have a chance to forget about their worries and attend the prom of their dreams.

This year's fourth annual prom is being held on June 18th, 2010 at Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, CA. The theme is Lights Camera, Action! and it'll be a star-studded event! Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is catering, magicians and caricaturists are providing entertainment, and celebrities are even expected to stop by!

What we love even more is all the amazing pre-prom pampering the participants get to experience! There's a dressing suite that all the girls and guys get to visit in advance to try on dress and suits that are donated by celebrities. Kim Kardashian's online shoe society ShoeDazzle.com are donating prom shoes to each of the girl prom goers too. And, all the guests are invited to a "beauty suite" prior to the evening's festivities where volunteer celebrity hair, makeup, and nail artists will assist the prom goers in getting glammed up for their special night.

Get involved by clicking here at No Worries Now. What other charities warm your heart?

Meet Soccer Star Lauren Cheney

May 11, 2010 at 2:00PM by Gennifer Delman |

lauren cheney

We love 22-year-old soccer star Lauren Cheney. She's passionate, talented and was recently named as an Under Armour athlete for her accomplishments! At such a young age, Lauren has dazzled with her impressive soccer skills and will be promoting UA's latest campaign, Protect This House. I Will with the likes of Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and many more. CG! caught up with the up-and-comer to get the deets on who inspires her, what advice she follows, and how she stays focused. Check it out:

CosmoGIRL!: Tell us more about the campaign and what it means to you.

Lauren Cheney: To me, Protect This House is protecting your teammates and your friends. I really think Under Armour encompasses not only athletics but being a good person and building good relationships. I think that has to do with being a role model for a younger player. I think the I Will part of the campaign is the dedication and promise you're making to yourself and to everyone else around you that you'll be a better person and athlete. You have to give it all you have.

CG!: What advice would you give to aspiring athletes?

LC: I would say "Only do what's in your control." As an athlete you want control of so much! Focus on what's in your control: Your fitness, how hard you train, and the effort you give. At the end of the day you will be happy and the result will most likely be in your favor.

CG!: What is it about soccer that you love the most?

LC: I just love to play! I love actually solving the game, I love the competition, and I love how physical it is. Practicing every day is so much fun!

CG!: How do you stay focused when playing?

LC: The funny thing is, I'm not focused if I'm not laughing, dancing, or smiling! I'm always the one dancing in the locker room before the game or laughing on the field when something goes wrong. When I'm having fun it just flows. If I'm enjoying it, it just comes naturally and it becomes easier to play.

CG!: Who inspires you?

LC: I've been blessed to have so many great coaches along the way. And I always look to my family for everything. My brother and sister are my best friends and my parents are my biggest fans. They're definitely my inspiration.

Keep an eye out for Lauren in the upcoming campaign commercials for Under Armour and be sure to cheer her on as she plays center forward for the Boston Breakers. Now that's girl power!

What is your favorite sport to play and why?

xoxo,

Gennifer

Help End Malaria Deaths by 2015

April 29, 2010 at 3:15PM by Gennifer Delman |

Gavin Degraw in Uganda

Did you know that half a billion cases of malaria are diagnosed each year? World Malaria Day may have been on April 25, but awareness about this disease is continuing to spread. "Chariot" and "In Love with a Girl" crooner Gavin DeGraw has partnered with the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets Buzz Tour to gain supporters for the cause and here's what you can do to help.

In an eco-friendly bus running on bio diesel and waste vegetable oil, the Buzz Tour bus is traveling across the nation in an effort to end malaria deaths by 2015. This disease is transmitted by bite and kills a child in Africa every 30 seconds. By taking part in the bus tour and checking out NothingButNets.net, you can help save a life by sending a mosquito net to a village in Africa. Find a "buzz stop" near you to help spread the word.

Check out this video of Gavin for inspiration:

What do you do to bring about positive change?

Five Questions with Youth Olympics Ambassador Erin Kennedy

April 26, 2010 at 12:00PM by Gennifer Delman |

Erin Kennedy

Something exciting is coming to your TV come August 2010 — The Youth Olympic Games! Thousands of teens 14-18 from over 200 countries across the globe will be coming together to participate in this competition in Singapore. Erin Kennedy is the U.S.A. Youth Ambassador for the Games, and CG! got to chat with her about what her job will entail, the fitness tips she follows, and more. Read on!

CosmoGirl!: Your role as Youth Ambassador involves encouraging athletes to participate in cultural and educational activities. How are you planning on telling young Olympians to take part in these activities?

Erin Kennedy: The whole point of the program is to bring the principle of Olympism whole circle; it's all about Holistic development. I think the athletes understand that they can bring excellence into their life by building friendships based on respect. I plan to help the athletes understand that these activities are not only going to be fun, but will help them exceed in sport and in the rest of their lives. This is going to be amazing opportunity to experience new cultures.

CG!: Which games are you most looking forward to watching come August?

EK: These are my first Olympic games, so I'm really excited to see all of the views. I am most looking forward to the opening ceremonies which will be held on a float on the world's largest floating stage which will be awesome! The opening and closing ceremonies will be held there.

CG!: What is your favorite thing about rugby?

EK: It doesn't matter what your age, size, or gender is in rugby. There's always a spot for you, which isn't always possible in other sports. I also love that rugby is about being a community. As soon as you walk onto a pitch, you're instantly connected to a community that's worldwide. It's a camaraderie that's truly beyond words and makes every rugby day exciting!

CG!: What exercise and fitness advice do you follow?

EK: Working out shouldn't be a burden. It should be something you want to do and makes you smile. It doesn't mean that you have to be in the gym with weights — you just need to get up and get moving. Find something that you love to do and do it!

CG!: What advice would you give to aspiring athletes?

EK: Whether you're aspiring to be at the Youth Olympic Games or just participating recreationally, you just need to make sure you're having fun. Sports are such an amazing avenue for developing yourself holistically, staying healthy and active, and having fun. Make sure you're enjoying what you're doing — that's what life is all about!
