Is Facebook Stopping You from Getting Over Your Ex?

May 26, 2010 at 11:00AM by Anna Hyclak |

Flirt Fraud

You and your boyfriend have called it quits. You've ended the relationship online, returning to "Single" status and purging your photo albums of any and all reminders that you guys once kissed and hugged and shared laughs and inside jokes. You've told all of your friends that you're totally over him and even gave your number to that cute guy who always sings Jack Johnson covers at your school's Open Mic nights.

And yet, in spite of all of this, you still find yourself stalking Mr. Ex on Facebook. Really stalking. Like finding yourself 20 pages deep into his tagged photos stalking. Or, reading his wall-to-wall exchanges with his brother stalking. And, compulsively checking his page every time you log-on stalking. You're not even sure why you're doing it — except that he's out of your life and you desperately want to know what he's up to. You don't even necessarily want to get back together with him — you just want an update. And maybe, just maybe, a sign that he's somehow less happy than you are.

Trust us. Stop right there. Break-ups are hard enough as it is, and seeing your ex smiling in pictures and exchanging wall posts with cute girls certainly isn't going to make things any easier (especially if he was the one to break your heart). As hard as it may be to look away, you need to do exactly that. Here's how:

Hide him from your News Feed You really don't need to see who he just became friends with or what he's doing later tonight — it will only make you jealous (and fuel your stalking habit). Out of the News Feed, out of mind, right? Make that your mantra!

Limit yourself to one glance at his page every day. Eventually you'll just stop looking all together. We promise!

Stay away from his pictures. He's going to look cuter and happier than you remember. He's not so don't torture yourself by trying to analyze his photos.

If all else fails, de-friend him or even block him. This might sound like a drastic move, but it's for your own good. You're never going to fully move on unless you stop creeping on Mr. Ex and start living your life again. Strike up a Facebook flirtation with the Jack Johnson soundalike — that'll give you something to do when you're bored and online.

Have you ever had to get over your ex by removing him from your friend list? How else has social media affected your dating life?

Xoxo,

Anna
