Rent the Runway Lets You "Borrow" Designer Dresses for Prom!

June 11, 2010 at 10:25AM by Gemma Resaba |

Prom Dress Spenderella

Prom season is here and it's time to live out your Cinderella fantasies!  Rent the Runway is an amazing site (and your new fairy godmother) that has a ton of great prom dresses available to rent for the night at 90 percent off! We swear this is real and not a hoax!

Rent the Runway was founded by two women (both named Jennifer) who met and created the site while attending Harvard Business School. The site gives users access to rent current season designer dresses and jewelry at a fraction of the price! You can get red-carpet style and experiment with different looks and brands without worrying about breaking the bank. Sweet, right?

Worried that the dress won't fit correctly once it arrives? Well, you have the option of choosing two different lengths so it will fit just right. You can choose between R-Regular if you are 5'4"-5'6" and L-Long for heights above 5'6". Rent the Runway also sends you a second size as a backup in whatever dress you order for free too!  They also provide a styling kit with essentials such as double-sided tape. You can even ask that they send you your dress in both lengths so that you can decide whether you want to rock your dress in flats or heels. We think that's a lot better than going to a tailor! Once prom is over, you just send back your gown in the prepaid envelope included in your order and that's it! So easy!

Use Rent the Runway for prom and any other formal event you have upcoming from weddings to Homecoming come back-to-school in the fall! We promise that you'll find a dream gown that your Prince Charming won't resist!

Are you going to try Rent the Runway? What other tricks do you know for getting designer dresses for less?

June 7, 2010 at 10:00AM by Lauren Brown |

Plie Shapewear

If you're like us, then you love creating a smoother look under your tighter and more formfitting outfits by wearing undergarments and shapewear. But let's face it, as the months get hotter and stickier — the last thing you want is to add any more layers! Well, we're psyched to tell you about Plié — the Brazilian Shapewear for All Day Wear that's finally available in the United States! Brazil has warm weather year-round so Plié's fabric is made with a unique moisture-management system which draws perspiration gently away from the surface of the skin and as it evaporates, it naturally keeps you cool. With its 10 percent to 15 percent Lycra content, the close-fitting garments can be worn all day without any discomfort.

Amazing, right? It gets even better as all Plié waistbands and bra bases are made of a special Lycra that has memory. No matter how much it is stretched, it always returns to its original shape so you can look hot but stay cool all summer long!

Check out all of Plié's styles and colors at their Website LoveYourShape.net. Are you going to try Plié?

Prom Hair Guide

May 27, 2010 at 11:00AM by Kayla Hutzler |

Side Slung Ponytail

Your hair for prom is extremely important — in close-up photos, it's the main attraction! You should consider the style of your dress, what accessories you'll be wearing, and what the weather might be like when deciding on how to wear your hair.

If you have not done so already, the first thing is to book your appointment at the hair salon. You never want to get your hair done too early and have to sit around all day trying not to mess it up. You also don't want to be cutting it too close to when your date is supposed to arrive — most salons will be running behind on prom day as it is. Lastly, do not pick a salon too far away — traffic is not something you want to worry about. Generally, try to make your appointment for at least two hours before you're supposed to be somewhere for pictures.

If your dress is really bold or has a lot of prints, then a simpler hairstyle is necessary. Elegant ponytails or side buns complement every style and can be amped up with dramatic parts, small flowers, or some volume on top. Blow outs are always an option too, just remember — it's going to get hot on the dance floor so you may frizz!

If your dress is simple and therefore allows for a more attention-grabbing up-do, then go for it! Getting your hair done is so much fun. Braids, curls, crimps, waves, poufs can all be incorporated into one style and still look great. If you need extensions than be sure to get them a few days before. Don't expect the hair salon to be able to do them without fair warning.

To find great hair styles, we suggest going online and glancing through the red-carpet photos from any Hollywood event — celebs have the best stylists at their fingertips and always show off the newest looks. And, you can even stop by your hair salon a few days before your appointment and show them the picture so they can make sure they have all the proper tools!

What hairstyle are you wearing to prom?

What to Wear Under Your Prom Dress

May 26, 2010 at 1:00PM by Kayla Hutzler |

Padded Bra

Okay, now that you have a prom dress and the perfect prom shoes, you can't forget what you’re going to wear under them! It may seem like a trivial detail, but it's super important — no one wants panty lines or bra straps taking attention away from your gorgeous dress!

If you're wearing a strapless or halter gown, the best thing to get is a sticky bra! Many dress stores and even Victoria's Secret carry them but the NuBra is amazing! It may seem weird at first, but it doesn't fall off or de-stick, no matter how much you dance (trust us!).

If your dress does have thick straps, than feel free to stick with a normal bra, just make sure to try it on to be sure — especially if the straps are racer back or crisscross.

As far as on bottom, Victoria's Secret Second Skin Satin panties are without a doubt your best option!

Just some closing thoughts: If your dress is low-cut don't forget double-sided fashion tape! And, while you're trying everything on, dance for a few minutes to make sure everything stays in place!

Have you gotten under-garments for your prom dress yet? What else do you recommend to keep things in place?

Xoxo,

Kayla

Prom Shoe Guide

May 25, 2010 at 11:00AM by Kayla Hutzler |

T-Strap Shoes

Now that you have dress all figured out, it's time to find your dream shoes. If you can, bring the shawl that came with your dress to the store. Or, if you get your dress tailored, ask for a scrap of extra material so you can make sure your shoes complement your gorgeous dress when you go shopping.

If your dress is long then the shoes don't need to be super glamorous. If you're trying to match them to the dress, make sure they're exactly the same color since the material will be right next to the shoes. I suggest getting them dyed if this is what you're thinking. If not, silver or the fabulously in-style nude heels almost always work.

Short dresses require a little more attention to the shoes. Make sure the style and the color complement the style of your dress. Strappy, feminine heels may look off with a funky, "Kristen Stewart" inspired dress.

While picking out shoes, keep in mind the height of your date! Also, don't forget that you're going to be in these shoes for a pretty long time, so make sure they're comfortable! Chances are you'll be walking through grass when you take pictures (usually outside) and you'll be dancing the night away in them! If they're not comfy you'll be miserable — believe me!

Have you picked out shoes to go with your dress? Are you going short or long?

Xoxo,

Kayla

Last-Minute Prom Dress Tips

May 24, 2010 at 12:00PM by Kayla Hutzler |

Jessica McClintock - Style # 32553

Hi everyone! If you're currently in the crazy, chaotic process of getting all your ducks in a row for prom — I'm incredibly jealous! I love, love, love proms and went to five when I was in high school!

If you haven't gotten your dress in already, it's absolutely time to go buy one. It's a little late to order a dress that you find online — not only is there the possibility that it won't come in time, but even if it's on time you might not like the dress in person, or it may need to be fitted.

That being said, when looking for a dress always have a mom or mentor with you — friends are great, but unless you know they will tell you the truth, sometimes they're too nice. It's never fun to look back through pictures and hate the way the dress clung to your love handles. Choose shapes that flatter your figure, don't automatically go for something trendy. Also, check what colors your friends are wearing so this way you won’t all blend together in pictures.

If you already have your dress, now is a good time to try it back on — a lot can change in the months since you purchased it. Your prom diet may have been awesome, but what if you lose too much and your strapless dress no longer stays up? Not too much should change between now and prom, so if it needs to be tailored or steamed now is the time.

What kind of dress are you wearing to prom? What other last-minute prom related errands are you busy taking care of?

Xoxo,

Kayla

Fashion Pieces to Wear This Summer and Fall!

May 19, 2010 at 2:00PM by Tyler Rowell |

Striped Romper

You've heard of investing in looks that go from day to night? Well how about that looks you can wear through summer into fall? Here are fashion's latest must-have trends that will have you in style all year round.

Plaid Shirts: They're all the rage for summer. Pair it with a jean skirt or shorts and you're good to go! Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr always makes it look great. Take the look into fall by pairing it with some skinny jeans, boots, and a hat!

Denim Shorts: Whether they're the "boyfriend" style, short cuffed, or destroyed — jean shorts are the IT thing for summer. They can be worn with pretty much anything, and the best part? They're in for fall too! Wear them with black tights underneath, and some combat boots for a rugged look!

Blazers: Long blazers in every color are a classic look that's here to stay. They can be worn with virtually anything and can be worn anywhere. Whitney Port makes it work as a summer look. During the fall, wear with a great pair of jeans, scarf, and booties.

Rompers: Rompers are just coming into the fashion world, but they're the hottest item for summer. They're perfect to throw on for a relaxing warm day. The key to taking this look from summer to fall is to invest in a neutral color romper and in the fall — wear with tights and booties.

What pieces do you already own and what will you be shopping for this weekend to add to your wardrobe?

XoXo,

Tyler

California Teen Goes Green for Prom

May 4, 2010 at 1:15PM by Gennifer Delman |

CG! adores spotlighting teens that use creativity to make an impact in their community. That's why we were so impressed with California's 17-year-old Ally Maize. Ally founded the Green Youth Movement, an effort to encourage teens to participate in green-conscious behavior.

To spread awareness, Ally will be heading to... senior prom! Lindee Daniel of Puridee designed a green gown just for her made entirely of high-quality peace silks called ahimsa and tussah. These sustainable materials not only look great but are great for the environment. Now that's eco-friendly chic!

Want to get involved with Ally's cause? Be sure to follow the movement on Twitter.

What color dress will you wear to prom? Give CG! the deets.

Gennifer

April 27, 2010 at 11:00AM by Divya Bahl |

Gucci Clutch

Love Christian Louboutins, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. and Marc Jacobs, but not the expensive price tags? Well, you're in luck because I have some great news! There's this fabulous new Website called OohILove.com that makes it easy to wear the same high-end designers as the stars without spending movie star money!

The way OohILove.com works is quite ingenious. It's an auction site and you pay per bid on the items you're most interested in winning. When you sign up, you get one free bid but after that you can purchase "bid packages." We recommend starting with a package of 30 that comes out to 99 cents per bid.

If you're the last bidder standing — you win! Everything on the site is 100 percent authentic, so no risk of winning a fake Prada bag here! You can be sure to be getting the real deal at 90 percent or more off!! People have won Chanel earrings for 50 cents and Tiffany & Co. necklaces for $2! So, you really have nothing to lose — except the chance to win a hot, designer bag for dirt cheap if you don't check it out! You'll be in the envy of all your friends when you strut into class wearing a new Marc Jacobs handbag!

What do you think about OohILove.com? Will you try it? What other sites do you use to score on designer duds on the cheap?
