Operation Deactivate Facebook: Failed

November 15, 2008 at 7:00AM by Vanessa Friedman |

Girl Blowing A Kiss At A Laptop

So as you might remember from last week, I deactivated my Facebook. I felt like there was too much information about me online, and I didn't like how much time I spent browsing (stalking) other people's pages.

Well girls, as many of you may have predicted, I did not last very long. In fact, I lasted a very pathetic 8 days. It was like Chanukah but with no presents and no miracle. Uh…kind of.

Okay, I guess there was a miracle of some sort: I now have proof that it is possible to go a whole week without a Facebook. And I guess I probably could have gone longer, but I was just craving it. Maybe that's sad (probably) or maybe it's just a reflection on our generation.

The interesting thing is, I didn't only miss stalking and posting photos. I also realized it was harder to do certain things. I'm in charge of planning a Greek life event next week with some guys — when we met to talk logistics, they suggested we get a Facebook message chain going so we could all be on the same page. I had to sheepishly suggest e-mail. And when I wanted to contact a girl in my English class about what readings were due the next day, I realized that even though I considered us friendly, I didn't have her phone number, e-mail, or screen name. Guess we weren't as friendly as I thought, but still, if I'd just been on Facebook it would have been so easy to track her down (and I would've been prepared for lecture the next day!)

I guess the moral of the story is that maybe Facebook isn't necessary, but it's become a given in our society. I mean, the real reason I ended up reactivating my account was because not having Facebook was inconvenient…not because I'm obsessed or anything. Or at least, that's what I'll keep telling myself!

xoxo,
Vanessa

PS: Yesterday my mom called to tell me she just got a Facebook so she could be in touch with her friends from high school! So weird! Are any of your parents on Facebook? How do you feel about it?
