Cute Summer Updos!

June 8, 2010 at 10:00AM by Tonie Zamora |

Whitney Port Updo

For those of us who are constantly fighting frizz during the hot summer months, we found some super cute updos so you can look great while having fun in the sun. Check out our three personal faves.

The Messy Bun: Whitney Port's messy bun is so chic. She wears it on the red carpet but you can wear it out to a party or even to the beach! The messier the better. To get Whitney's look, just part your hair, pulls it back, pull a few pieces in the front to frame your face, and top it with an adorable, oversize headband if you want. So easy and so chic!

The Sleek Bun: Heidi Klum and Sarah Jessica Parker are often seen donning sleek and elegant buns. They're so appropriate for evening and it is guaranteed to show off your gorgeous face! To get SJP's look, just make a ponytail, braid the end, twist it up, and pin it. This is perfect if your hair is curly or extra frizzy.

The Retro Updo: They're an oldie but goody! Beyoncé is the queen of the retro bouffant. To get Beyoncé's look, just tease your hair at the top, use plenty of hair spray, and pin it up. Make sure you smooth down the pieces closest to your face for the retro inspired look. If your hair is not full enough, you can totally use a Bump It a la Snookie from the Jersey Shore!

What updos are you wearing this summer? What updos are you dying to try?

Self-Tanning Tips for Prom

June 1, 2010 at 3:15PM by Kayla Hutzler |

We understand that you don't want to go to prom looking ghostly white — nor do you want to look Oompa Loompa orange. So, we have some thoughts to get a pre-prom tan that looks natural and is no fuss. If you're wearing a pastel or brightly colored dress you may feel like you need a little bit of color (rich colored dresses often complement pale skin) but don't hop in a tanning bed! Not only do you risk the chance of becoming a lobster the day before prom (something you really can't cover up) but it's also SO bad for you!

There are plenty of other options for achieving a sun-kissed glow before prom. They key to all of them: do a practice run!

The most foolproof way of getting a touch of color is to go a tanning salon and get a spray tan — some do it by hand, other have laser machines. Either way, try one out a few weeks before prom to make sure it's not streaky, too orange, or too light. Then if you decide it's perfect, get it done again three to four days before prom! Many salons have package deals so look into that as it may be cheaper.

You can also apply self-tanner to yourself. The new Sublime Bronze One-Day Gel by Loreal washes off with soap and water so you don't have to worry about looking like a leopard — you can wash it right off if you don't like it!

And, just a few tips for spray and self-tanners if you decide to go that route. Always shave and exfoliate before you apply it. This will help the color go on smoother and with less streaks. If you DIY, be sure to wash your hands immediately with soap and water to avoid orange hands. If you have more time, the really safe option is to use a gradual tan lotion — you're guaranteed not to have any streaks! Jergen's Natural Glow is our favorite — and it has a hint of shimmer that looks great for day and night!

What are your favorite self-tanners? Have any spray tan tips? Share them with us!

Get Summer-Ready Skin!

May 20, 2010 at 1:00PM by Mary Delsener |

Face Matters

Summer's almost here and everyone wants to look their best summertime fun like beach parties and vacations, right? Well, the key to maintaining that natural glow is taking care of your skin. And just FYI — June is National Acne Awareness Month!

The change in temperature can cause big changes to your skin. In fact, a recent study published in The Journal of Dermatology said that a majority of patients claimed their acne worsened as the temperature rises up due to increased oil production, sweating, and humidity. This is a great time to make an appointment with your dermatologist and review your skincare plan before the warmer months arrive.

One thing we need to remind you is that it's a myth that tanning is an acceptable skin care regime during the summer. Tanning can do some serious damage to your skin. Always wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen when you and your friends head outside to lounge by the pool! Also, there are lots of little lifestyle changes you can make to ensure that you have clear skin all summer long. Drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruit, and exfoliate to get rid of dry, flaky skin.

What are some things you do to keep your skin healthy? How do you change your skincare routine in the summer?

Hair Care for the Changing Seasons

May 18, 2010 at 12:30PM by Tyler Rowell |

Long Braid

Well, summer is just around the corner and we couldn't be more excited. But, a not-so-exciting thought is getting your hair out of that awkward stage between the dry winter months and the moist summer months. Not to panic! Here is how to take your hair from drab to fab with just a few steps!

Combat Dryness: Combing a conditioner through the hair and leaving it on for three minutes will help get adequate coverage. If your hair is extremely dry, use the conditioner as a masque by applying it to your hair, covering it with a plastic bag and letting it sit for 30 minutes. Do this weekly!

Your hair will start to look and feel great, but as the weather becomes warmer, the natural moisture levels of your hair do begin to change. You may notice this if your hair starts to become overly moist and limp. If this occurs, leave the conditioner on for only a minute before rinsing.

Protect: To avoid future dryness and damage after the summer months, it's important to protect your hair from UV damage just as you would your skin! The sun can cause unwanted split ends, lightening, and dryness. Plenty of brands are now offering UV protecting shampoo — making it easy than ever to add it into your summer beauty care regimen!

What are some of your summer beauty regimens? How do you keep your hair in shape year round?

Five Essential Beauty Tips for Prom

May 17, 2010 at 12:30PM by Tyler Rowell |

What Kind of Prom Dress Fits Your Personality?

Alas, prom season has arrived! We want your prom night to be fun and worry free and the last thing that should stress you out is your makeup! Here are five easy tips to follow to make sure you look and feel your best on the big night!

Keep It Simple: Play up either your eyes or your mouth. Picking one to focus on and downplaying the other is the key to looking fabulous! Pick which feature you prefer, or if you don't know — ask your friends. If you love your lips, go with shades of dark red or pink. Think Angelina Jolie. Then make sure to keep your eye makeup soft. If you love your eyes, play them up with liner, shadow, and mascara! If you do this, then just keep your lips light. For example, nude with a little gloss works great.

Create a Flawless Canvas: Picking the right foundation is key. You can tell when you apply the foundation lightly over your face. After you blend it into your jaw line or hairline and there's still a line, or it clearly doesn't match your neck — it's the wrong color. Remember the secret to foundation is to look like you're not wearing any at all.

Bring the Essentials: When it's time for pictures — use blotting papers on the oiliest parts of your face (usually the forehead, chin, and nose). This will reduce any shine.

Keep It You: Be sure to reflect yourself in your look. Don't feel like you have to change everything about you for one night of glamour. If you feel more comfortable with a certain look for your eye, then do your makeup that way. No matter how beautiful you look — if you aren't comfortable, it will show.

Practice Makes Perfect: You want to be confident and have fun! If you're still unsure of how you want your makeup to look, check out your favorite magazines for inspiration. Don't be afraid to mimic looks featured on all your favorite celebs. Often times, the magazine even prints the brand of cosmetics used for the look to make it totally easy. You can even host a pre-prom event and invite your girlfriends over for a night of practice. This way, there's no doubt you'll get your look just right for the big day.

Are you ready for prom? Do you have any pre-prom makeup tips to share?

The Lowdown on Summer Skincare

May 4, 2010 at 11:35AM by Gennifer Delman |

SKN beverly hills Safe Tan

She's treated Britney Spears and Demi Moore, and now she's sharing her tips with CG! readers! Dr. Vicki Rapaport has launched a skincare line called SKN beverly hills that contains all natural products to keep your skin fresh during the summer. CG! is digging the Safe Tan in a bottle for beach days. Here, she shares her summer skincare tips:

CosmoGIRL!: What is the best SPF for teens?

Dr. Vicki Rapaport: The best SPFs are 30 or higher. You don't need to go too crazy and go so high (say 70 and up). I really think that's too much chemical on the skin. So make it SPF 30 or a little higher and make it chemical free if possible.

CG!: How does the sun affect acne?

VR: The real scientific answer is that the sun is an immunosuppresant. It does help acne in the first few exposures but over time, that reaction becomes less effective and you can continue breaking out just as before. It dries up the oil glands but they're also basically calming down our immune system. Your body realizes, "I won't let the rays suppress me anymore," so your acne returns.

CG!: Besides wearing SPF at all times, what else do teens need to know about protecting their skin during the summer?

VR: They need to know that when they're young, that's when damage occurs. This is the time to protect your skin. Eighty percent of damage we get from the sun we get before we turn 18 years old! To be safe, stay away from sunburns or getting tan. There's no such thing as a gradual, safe, tanning from the sun. I love swim shirts and hats for the beach.

CG!: What SPF is needed for the whole body even when it isn't sunny?

VR: SPF means sun protection factor. So think of it this way: If somebody burns in an hour, SPF 30 will protect you 30 times that time it takes you to burn. So, don't be fooled by overcast days — You can still get lots of UV ray exposure. I would still recommend an SPF of 30 or higher. You won't need to reapply unless you're swimming or sweating a lot.

CG!: How can teens maintain their healthy skin?

VR: During the summer, it means a couple of things. Obviously more sun exposure, humidity, sweating, and likely breakouts. To help curb breakouts you should switch around your cleanser and try a strong benzoyl peroxide wash and facial scrub to help with the oil and sweat buildup. Also, wear a hat — It's the best sunscreen out there!

The Black Orchid Is This Season's "It" Color

April 19, 2010 at 3:30PM by Gennifer Delman |

Laura Mercier Lipstick

Dark tones like black orchid are in for spring! Celebs like Leighton Meester have worn dark shades on their lips to perfect the glam night-out look and now you can, too!

Black orchid isn't just a hot color for the season, it's also a beneficial ingredient in beauty products. This rare flower blooms only at night in exotic locations like Hawaii and Thailand, and its essential oils help hydrate your skin to leave it in excellent condition.

That's why it makes such a great lipstick, like this one from Laura Mercier ($20). It acts as a lip balm and a lip color to show off and maintain your lips. Remember: If you're going to rock this look, keep the rest of your makeup minimal and neutral. That way the cutie from American History won't be able to take his eyes off of you — In a good way!

Be sure to become a fan of Laura Mercier on Facebook!

At-Home Recipes for Pretty Prom Hair!

March 17, 2010 at 11:15AM by Divya Bahl |

Henna Hair Color

Prom's coming up and the first thing to fantastic hair is getting it smooth, shiny and healthy way in advance. You don't need to spend big bucks at the salon either. You can do it yourself with ingredients straight from your mom's pantry! No matter what your pre-prom hair dilemma, we have the recipe to fix it — stat!

Super Shine: Caffeine can intensify your dark locks and make it really stand out! Just brew a pot of non-flavored coffee or strong black tea and soak your hair in it. Comb through, cover your head with a plastic shower cap, and sit for 20-30 minutes. Rinse it out, shampoo and rinse again with cold water to give it super shine!

No More Frizz: Mix a banana, ¼ cantaloupe, two tbsp of yogurt, and one tbsp of olive oil together in a blender. Apply the mixture to damp, unwashed hair and comb through all the way. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then rinse it out. Shampoo and condition your hair. You'll notice your hair will be way smoother when you style it for prom!

Super Strong Ends: Sick of split ends? An avocado mask can help moisturize and repair destroyed hair. Mix together one mashed avocado, ¼ cup of honey and one can of coconut milk in a bowl. Put it on dry hair, especially over your split ends. Cover with a shower cap and blast the hairdryer over it for five minutes. Let you the mask sit for an additional 30 minutes. Rinse well, but don't shampoo! Voila — healthier hair in no time!

Bye Bye Dandruff: Mix ½ cup of water and ½ cup of white vinegar. Put it directly on your scalp and then start shampooing. We recommend doing this twice a week for flake-free locks!

Not only will this cut down your prom budget, but also, it's a natural way to have healthy, beautiful hair all year round!

Do you have any other home recipes to recommend for an amazing mane?

Get your Eyebrows in Shape for Prom

March 1, 2010 at 12:10PM by Gennifer Delman |

Shaping your eyebrows are an essential part of your prom look. With your brows in tip-top shape, your eye makeup will look extra fab on prom night. Though it may seem like a minor detail, folllow these easy tips for maintaning your brows to make sure they look perfect on the big night!

For unshaped, unruly eyebrows, go to a brow specialist a few days before your prom. She will shape your brows and define your arches. Then, if any new hairs pop up before prom night, you can easily tweeze those strays.

Prefer to DIY at home? Stand a few inches from your mirror and tweeze the stray hairs below your brows and between your eyes. After every pluck, step a foot away from the mirror and check your progress. Do this the day before prom and your brows will look freshly groomed on your big night.

For over-plucked brows, brush brow powder over the bare areas using short, hair-like strokes. A dark blond powder hue works on fair to medium brows, and brunette powder is best for dark brows. Blend in the powder by brushing brows with a clean toothbrush. Then dip a flat, thin makeup brush into brow wax and apply it over your brows in short strokes. The wax will keep the hairs and powder in place.

For all of other beauty needs, keep following the CG! beauty blog.
